Agencies and Financials: Who Pays and Provides for Which Costs


In a typical temporary hire contract, the temp agency charges the business for the cost of the temporary employee’s salary plus an additional percentage to cover management of the temporary contract. From that fee, employees at the agencies derive their own salary for providing recruiting and management services to the company. Additional expenses might also be covered, including providing time off for employees, benefits or additional ancillary costs like relocation.
Temporary employees typically are not on the hook for costs owed to their agencies, although they may have to pay for the cost of having a background check and fingerprinting performed. They are often considered contract workers, so while some additional costs towards benefits may be deducted from their paychecks, they may need to cover their own taxes.
If a business and its temp worker desire to form a longer-term relationship through a temp-to-hire deal, the business will be assessed a fee by the agency — sometimes up to a quarter of the worker’s yearly salary. While this can seem like a steep cost, it’s akin to a finder’s fee or recruiting fee a business might ordinarily pay to an outside recruiter or head hunter. Temporary employees typically bear none of this cost.
